The velvet spots and motifs are stitched onto the jacket when it is finished. A few wool fibres are placed under the velvet to give a slightly raised surface.

Place the thin plastic resist with the wrap marking drawn on it, over the centre, matching up the front edge. Press down to spread the water. Lay wool in the same way over the opposite side up to the front wrap edge. Wet out with soapy water and cover this side with thin plastic, pressing down well again to remove the air and ensure the wool is thoroughly wet. Wet the surface of the plastic.

Start felting by gently massaging the edges of the garment, working inwards so that the wool does not spread out from the edges and form ridges. Turn the jacket over using the roller and massage this side.

Fold the arms in over the body of the jacket, still wrapped in the thin plastic. Using the roller, roll the garment up tightly, gently squeezing out any excess water that may be oozing out. Wrap a towel round the bundle and tie the roll tightly. Roll about 100 times, unwrap, make a quarter turn and re-roll. Repeat the rolling until the felt has been rolled in each direction. Remove the plastic covering from the surface and inspect the felt. Apply the pinch test to make sure that the fibres have felted together. If it looks a little dry apply more hot, soapy water. Replace the thin plastic on the surface of the jacket, gently roll up without the roller and squeeze the bundle, manipulating the felt. If the template has begun to curl up because the garment is shrinking, remove the plastic sheeting and start cutting the bottom of the sleeves and the hem open. Try to avoid cutting the template. Do not remove the template at this stage.

The cut edges will now need to be sealed or felted. Using soapy hands, gently rub the rough edges against the bubble-wrap. Roll the jacket up in the bubble-wrap again and continue rolling until there has been more shrinking and the felt is becoming thicker and stronger. You may now treat the felt a little more vigorously. Keeping it wet and soapy, roll and gently drop on to the table. Continue until the felt has become firm and is the size that you require.

Finally, rinse the jacket in cold water to remove all the soap. If you have a spin dryer (not a tumble dryer) this is great for removing the excess water, so that you can try it on for size. Stretch the jacket into shape and dry it flat. You may press the jacket with an iron on a wool setting, for a smooth finish.
